The Brutal Truth About Crypto: My $100K Roller Coaster Ride
I've made $47,000 in crypto. I've also lost $30,000. Sometimes in the same week. This isn't another "crypto will make you rich" post or "crypto is a scam" rant. This is the real, mathematical, emotional truth about crypto investing from someone who's survived two full market cycles.
Started with $1,000 in 2019 knowing nothing. Peak portfolio value: $78,000. Current value: $47,000. The journey between those numbers includes euphoria, despair, life-changing gains, and soul-crushing losses.
If you're thinking about crypto, read this first. I'll show you exactly what I bought, when I sold, what I lost, and most importantly, how to invest in crypto without ruining your life.

My Crypto Origin Story
December 2019: The FOMO Entry
Bitcoin hit $7,000. Everyone talking about it. I knew nothing but didn't want to miss out.
My First Purchase:
- Bought 0.14 BTC for $1,000
- Used Coinbase (easiest for beginners)
- Paid $15 in fees (1.5%)
- Immediately down $50
Watched it every 5 minutes for a month. Exhausting.
The First Reality Check
January 2020:
- Bitcoin hit $9,000
- My $1,000 now worth $1,285
- Thought I was a genius
- Bought $2,000 more at $9,000
March 2020:
- COVID crash
- Bitcoin fell to $4,800
- Portfolio: $3,000 invested, worth $1,600
- Down 47%
- Nearly sold everything
This is when I learned crypto's first lesson: You haven't made or lost anything until you sell.
The Bull Run That Changed Everything
The 2020-2021 Explosion
Didn't sell during COVID crash. Best decision ever.
Portfolio Evolution:
- April 2020: $2,000 (started buying more)
- August 2020: $5,000
- December 2020: $12,000
- February 2021: $35,000
- April 2021: $78,000
Total Invested: $8,000 Peak Value: $78,000 Unrealized Gain: $70,000 (875%)
I was refreshing my portfolio every 30 seconds. Couldn't sleep. Crypto consumed my life.
What I Actually Owned
April 2021 Portfolio (Peak):
- Bitcoin: 0.8 BTC @ $60,000 = $48,000
- Ethereum: 5 ETH @ $3,500 = $17,500
- Cardano: 3,000 ADA @ $1.40 = $4,200
- Chainlink: 100 LINK @ $35 = $3,500
- Dogecoin: 10,000 DOGE @ $0.40 = $4,000 (yes, really)
- Various others: $800
Biggest Winners:
- Ethereum: Bought at $200, peaked at $4,100 (20x)
- Cardano: Bought at $0.10, peaked at $2.50 (25x)
- Dogecoin: Bought at $0.003, sold at $0.40 (133x)
The Crash Nobody Talks About
May 2021:
- Portfolio went from $78,000 to $35,000 in two weeks
- Lost $43,000 in paper gains
- Didn't sell anything
- Watched it bounce back to $65,000
- Then crash again to $30,000
The volatility was destroying my mental health.
The Bear Market Education (2022-2023)
The Long Bleed
2022 Portfolio Destruction:
- January: $45,000
- May: $25,000 (Terra Luna collapse)
- November: $15,000 (FTX collapse)
- December: $12,000
Lost $33,000 from January to December. But here's the thing: I kept buying.
Dollar-Cost Averaging Through Hell
Monthly Purchases During Bear:
- $500/month into BTC
- $300/month into ETH
- $200/month into index approach (top 10 cryptos)
Why I Kept Buying:
- Believed in long-term technology
- Prices were 80% off peaks
- Had stable income
- Only invested what I could lose
Total invested during bear: $12,000 Current value of bear purchases: $28,000
The 2024 Recovery
Current Portfolio (January 2025)
Holdings:
- Bitcoin: 1.2 BTC @ $39,000 = $46,800
- Ethereum: 8 ETH @ $2,400 = $19,200
- Solana: 100 SOL @ $80 = $8,000
- Index basket: $3,000
- Total: $47,000
Total Invested Over Time: $20,000 Current Value: $47,000 Realized Gains: $8,000 (sold some) Unrealized Gains: $27,000
Not life-changing money, but solid returns for high risk.
The Strategies That Actually Work
Strategy #1: Bitcoin and Ethereum Only (Safest)
For True Beginners:
- 70% Bitcoin (digital gold)
- 30% Ethereum (Web3 platform)
- Hold minimum 4 years
- Ignore everything else
Why This Works:
- Least likely to go to zero
- Most institutional adoption
- Clearest use cases
- Survived multiple cycles
Strategy #2: The Index Approach
My Current Strategy:
- 40% Bitcoin
- 30% Ethereum
- 30% Top 10 cryptos by market cap
Rebalance Quarterly:
- Sell winners
- Buy losers
- Maintain percentages
- Emotion-free decisions
This beats 90% of active crypto traders.
Strategy #3: The 90/10 Portfolio
For Conservative Investors:
- 90% traditional investments (stocks/bonds)
- 10% crypto (BTC/ETH)
- Rebalance annually
- Sleep well at night
If crypto goes to zero, lose 10%. If it 10x's, portfolio doubles.
The Mistakes That Cost Me $30,000
Mistake #1: Shitcoin Roulette ($8,000 loss)
Bought these gems:
- SafeMoon: $2,000 → $50
- Shiba Inu: $1,000 → $200 (after peak of $8,000)
- Random DeFi tokens: $5,000 → $300
Lesson: If it promises 1,000% returns, it's a scam.
Mistake #2: Leverage Trading ($12,000 loss)
Thought I could predict short-term movements.
The Disaster:
- Used 10x leverage on Bitcoin
- One 10% move wiped out position
- Lost $3,000 in 4 hours
- Did it 4 more times
Lesson: Leverage in crypto = guaranteed loss eventually.
Mistake #3: Not Taking Profits ($10,000 opportunity cost)
Had Dogecoin at 133x return. Didn't sell. Rode it back down to 20x.
Should Have:
- Sold initial investment at 2x
- Sold 25% at 10x
- Sold 25% at 50x
- Let rest ride
Lesson: Take profits or regret it.
The Tax Nightmare Nobody Warns You About
Every Trade Is Taxable
What I Didn't Know:
- Trading ETH for ADA = taxable event
- Moving between exchanges = not taxable
- Staking rewards = income tax
- DeFi yield = income tax
My 2021 Tax Bill
Trades Made: 247 Gross Proceeds: $125,000 Net Gain: $35,000 Tax Owed: $8,400
Had to sell crypto to pay crypto taxes. Ironic.
Tools That Saved Me
CoinTracker:
- Connects to all exchanges
- Calculates gains/losses
- Generates tax forms
- Worth every penny ($179)
Lesson: Track everything or pay later.
Security: How Not to Lose Everything
My Security Evolution
2019 (Naive):
- Everything on Coinbase
- Password: Birthday123!
- No 2FA
- Almost got phished twice
2025 (Paranoid but Safe):
- Hardware wallet (Ledger): 80%
- Major exchange: 15%
- DeFi protocols: 5%
- Different passwords everything
- 2FA on everything
- Never click email links
The $3,000 Lesson
What Happened:
- Clicked fake Metamask update email
- Entered seed phrase
- Wallet drained in 3 minutes
- Lost $3,000 in various tokens
Now:
- Hardware wallet for anything over $1,000
- Seed phrase in safety deposit box
- Never enter seed phrase online
- Assume everything is a scam
The Psychological Toll
The Addiction Phase
2021 Peak Madness:
- Checked portfolio 50+ times daily
- Woke up at 3 AM to check Asian markets
- Watched YouTube crypto 4 hours daily
- Joined 15 Telegram groups
- GF almost left me
Crypto became my entire personality. Don't be me.
The Depression Phase
2022 Bear Market:
- Portfolio down 70%
- Felt like complete idiot
- Avoided all crypto news
- Deleted apps
- Questioned everything
This is when most people sell at the bottom.
The Balanced Approach (Now)
Current Routine:
- Check portfolio weekly
- Buy monthly (automated)
- Read news occasionally
- No emotional decisions
- Crypto is 8% of net worth
Boring but sustainable.
DeFi: The Wild West
What Worked
Staking Ethereum:
- 4.5% APY
- Relatively safe
- Supporting network
- $800 earned last year
Lending Stablecoins:
- 8-12% APY on USDC
- Through Aave/Compound
- $1,200 earned
- Some risk, decent reward
What Failed Spectacularly
Yield Farming Disasters:
- Iron Finance: $2,000 → $0 (bank run)
- Wonderland: $1,500 → $0 (scam)
- Various farms: $3,000 → $400
Lesson: If APY is over 20%, you're the yield.
NFTs: My $10,000 Mistake
The JPEG Journey
What I Bought:
- Bored Ape knockoff: $3,000 → $100
- Random PFP projects: $4,000 → $200
- "Utility" NFTs: $3,000 → $0
Current Value: $300 Loss: $9,700
The One Winner
Bought ENS domain (cryptonoob.eth) for $100. Someone offered $2,000. Only NFT that made sense.
Lesson: 99% of NFTs go to zero. The 1% might be huge, but finding them is gambling.

The Hard Truths
Most People Lose Money
Why:
- Buy high, sell low
- Leverage
- Scams
- No strategy
- Emotional decisions
You're Not a Genius in Bull Markets
Everyone's a genius when everything goes up. The real test is surviving and thriving through a bear market.
Nobody Knows Anything
People Who Don't Know:
- YouTube influencers
- Twitter experts
- Your successful friend
- Me
- You
If someone knew, they'd be on a yacht, not making content.
This Could All Go to Zero
Unlikely but possible:
- Government bans
- Technical failure
- Something better invented
- Black swan event
Never invest the rent money.

- Focus on Bitcoin/Ethereum
- Hold minimum 4 years
